How and Why to Clean an Ice Machine?
Having a properly cleaned ice machine is not a choice—it is a necessity! Clear, perfectly formed ice cubes result from an efficient system that has been properly maintained. Every ice machine collects various forms of contamination, such as mold, mildew, minerals, bacteria, etc., if allowed to accumulate without prevention or correction.
Even with a high-quality ice maker, once the buildup on the ice-making components has reached a critical point, you will notice drastically reduced efficiency, poor-looking ice, and foul odors.
Cleaning your ice machine regularly, whether you use it at home or in a busy restaurant kitchen, ensures that your ice will be safe for consumption, your ice maker will deliver the highest available ice-making capabilities, and the taste of mixed drinks will not be like they came off the shelf in the store.
Properly maintained ice makers will produce excellent-quality ice and will continually perform at their maximum abilities.
Why Do You Need to Clean the Ice Machine?
Although ice machines appear clean externally, internally, they provide an ideal habitat for mold, minerals, and bacteria. Water flows continuously through an ice machine’s components, leaving behind many contaminants that build up on its internal surfaces over time. These contaminants harm both the quality and safety of your ice.
Dirty ice machines may generate cloudy cubes, unpleasant odours, reduced production speeds, and, in some cases, produce ice that is unsafe to eat. By routinely cleaning your ice machine, you will maintain the efficiency of the unit and protect its components from excessive wear and tear, while providing yourself and others with the freshest and safest ice possible.
How to Clean Your Ice Machine?
To maintain the quality of your ice and to reduce the risk of germs multiplying within the unit, routine cleaning of an ice machine is crucial, as is ensuring that the ice machine runs effectively.
Ice machines can be found in homes and commercial establishments. In either case, cleaning an ice machine entails emptying, descaling, sanitizing, and rinsing. Below are step-by-step cleaning instructions to ensure a thorough cleaning of the ice machine.
1. Unplug Your Ice Machine and Remove All Ice
The first step to cleaning your ice machine safely is to unplug it. The second step is to remove all ice from the bin by discarding it. If you have any ice left that happens to be frozen to the sides of the machine, let it melt naturally. Do not ever attempt to break off or pull off the ice using sharp objects, as doing so could damage the machine.
2. Take Out Internal Components (If Possible)
Most ice machines have removable components, such as:
- Ice Bin
- Water Reservoir
- Ice Filters/Trays
- Ice Scoops/Shelves
All the components of the machine that can be safely taken out should be taken out to help provide a deeper cleaning of the unit and to eliminate the chance of debris being hidden in some of the more difficult places from which to access.
3. Clean the Ice Machine Using Warm Water and Mild Soap
The ice bin water reservoir, the ice filters/trays, the ice scoops/shelves, and all other removable parts should be thoroughly cleaned by washing them with warm, soapy water. And while cleaning the ice machine, do not forget to remove and scrub away any of the following:
- Mineral Deposits
- Slime/Residue
- Mold/Mildew
After cleaning all parts of the ice machine, rinse them thoroughly to help eliminate any remaining soap and to avoid having soap contamination in the next ice cycle.
4. Remove Scale From Ice Machine
Constant water flow creates mineral and limescale buildup in your ice machine. To eliminate these buildups, use a manufacturer-approved solution to remove scale deposits.
Apply the descaling solution to:
- Water reservoir
- Ice-making area
- As much of the piping assembly as you can access (valves, etc.)
These descaling solutions must remain in contact with the area for the time specified by the manufacturer before rinsing off. Cleaning solutions designed for use in ice machines should not contain corrosive chemicals unless specified by the manufacturer.

5. Sanitize Surfaces
Sanitize surfaces with food-safe sanitizing solution to eliminate mould, algae, and bacteria. The sanitizing solution should be used on:
- Interior surfaces of the ice machine
- Ice trays/plates
- Areas where water is taken in
- Removable parts of the machine
Sandwich the sanitizer to allow for drying out (this lets the sanitizer do a better job of disinfecting).
6. Clean the Outside
Dust, fingerprints, and grime can accumulate on the exterior of the ice machine. Clean the exterior with:
- A damp rag (wipe down the ice machine before applying detergent)
- A mild detergent. Mild detergent should not be mixed with any cleaning solutions that contain bleach, ammonia, or alcohol.
- Stainless steel cleaning products.
7. Run a Cleaning Cycle (If Applicable)
Most newer ice machines offer the ability to utilize a built-in cleaning cycle or rinse cycle, whereby a manufacturer-approved cleaning solution is added, and a cleaning cycle is initiated according to the user’s manual.
Cleaning cycles:
- Flush internal lines
- Remove any obstructions not easily seen or accessed (e.g., from freezing and thawing)
- Help to keep water flowing through the ice maker’s water supply lines clear.
8. Reassemble and Turn the Ice Machine Back on
Place all parts back in their right places and connect the power supply. Your ice machine will start producing ice once it is activated. The first batch of ice produced must be discarded after you have completely cleaned the machine and replaced it with a clean batch of ice, thereby ensuring that there is no residual cleaning agent in your newly added batch of ice.
9. Regularly Clean the Ice Machine
To avoid future build-up of contaminants:
- For home-use machines, do a thorough cleaning every two to four weeks.
- Commercial ice machines should be cleaned every one to two weeks.
- Replace water filter(s) according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
If kept clean continuously, the ice machine will operate efficiently, produce ice that is clear, and eliminate off-flavors and odors from the ice it produces.
Signs You Need to Clean Your Ice Maker
While you may not observe what is happening on the inside of your ice maker, it will certainly leave behind telling signs that it requires cleaning. These signs include:
- Strange taste or smell in ice, i.e., metal-like, damp, or sour, which indicates it may be contaminated with germs or minerals.
- Discoloured/cloudy or stained ice – these are often signs of trapped mineral deposits, mold, or a dirty water supply.
- Slower rate of ice making – the machine works harder and takes more time to freeze because of mineral deposits built up on its parts.
- Ice cubes are smaller than usual, caused by reduced flow of water because of obstruction by scale or dirt.
- Excess slime, moldy residue, or other debris is present inside the bin or water storage. (Green, pink, brown biofilm)
- Ice cubes are either stuck together or caused by temperature control issues.
- The equipment produces more sound than usual because of a dirty evaporator or fan.
- Water pooling or leaking due to blocked or dirty drains.
- Frequent equipment jams or freezing, every time due to mineral deposits forming on moving parts.
- If it has been 1–3 months since the last cleaning, regardless of whether there are symptoms, you should schedule time each month for routine maintenance cleaning.
